As food insecurity deepens and the future of federal food assistance remains uncertain, Veridian Credit Union has stepped forward with a timely and transformational gift, becoming the Thanksgiving Table sponsor for hundreds of families served by Families Forward’s Bidwell Pantry. This generous partnership will provide local families with full holiday meals during one of the most challenging seasons in recent memory.
The support comes as the community braces for disruptions in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. Due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, there is growing concern not just about whether aid will arrive, but when. Even if benefits are approved, delays in distribution could leave Des Moines families struggling to put food on the table, especially during the holidays.
“In times of uncertainty, it’s powerful to see local organizations step up with compassion and leadership,” said Suzanne Zutter, Executive Director of Families Forward. “Veridian Credit Union’s commitment ensures that families can still gather around the table this Thanksgiving with dignity, tradition, and hope.”
Bidwell Pantry, the most utilized food pantry in Iowa, has already served more than 81,000 individuals this year alone, providing not just food, but clothing, diapers, and hygiene essentials. The Thanksgiving Table program is a highlight of the season, bringing warmth and connection to families experiencing hardship.
“Like many credit unions, Veridian was founded on the need to support our communities and the people in them,” said Veridian President and CEO Renee Christoffer. “The number of people facing food insecurity in our communities is growing, and it’s important that we support those working to address it – especially this holiday season.”
This critical sponsorship aligns with Families Forward’s mission to offer wraparound support that includes housing, early childhood education, emergency shelter, and food security—supporting thousands of Iowans on their journey toward independence.
